  • Introduction

    • The aim of this resource is to:

      • support teachers in conducting the Cambridge International AS Level German Language 8027 Component 4 Speaking test
      • demonstrate the role of the teacher/examiner and the structure of the Speaking test for examination from 2025
      • give an indication of different levels of candidate performance.

The videos in this resource are demonstrations only and include some moderator comments. The candidates and teachers volunteered to take part so that we could provide this support for our teachers. The tests were marked and commented on by a Cambridge moderator.

The final moderator comments, marks, and full transcripts are provided in a downloadable document.
Grades and certificates were not given to any of the participants.

We used the 2025 specimen materials which are available on the School Support Hub

      Presentation

      The candidate communicates detailed information.

      Follow-up discussion

This is a competent performance by the candidate. The candidate fully engages in the conversation, and has good interaction with the teacher/examiner. She responds confidently.

      Conversation task card 3

The candidate completes all tasks confidently, communicating relevant information. She engages in the conversation and has good interaction with the teacher/examiner, responding to questions/prompts. Ideas and opinions, however, are rare and they are not really justified.

There is some very competent use of idiomatic phrases, sentence structure and vocabulary. She uses a range of appropriate vocabulary and structures, though specific vocabulary is sometimes missing.

      Pronunciation and Intonation

The candidate pronounces sounds in an authentic manner, and her intonation is good and she sounds very natural.

      How the candidate could improve

      • More development of ideas and opinions would improve the presentation.
      • Exploring the topic in more depth in the follow-up discussion.
      • Justify, develop and explain her answers in more detail.

      The teacher/examiner

The teacher/examiner could have tried to lead the candidate away from providing mainly factual information in the presentation and follow-up discussion.

The teacher/examiner could have helped her to justify, develop and explain her answers in more detail in the follow-up discussion by asking questions eliciting ideas and opinions more clearly. Possible questions could have been: Wie wichtig sind Feste wie Weihnachten oder Ostern in unserer Zeit? Glaubst du, solche Feste sind heutzutage für jüngere Leute noch relevant? Glaubst du, wir brauchen Feste wie Weihnachten? Kannst du deutsche Feste mit Festen in deinem Land vergleichen? Wie wichtig/ relevant findest du die Traditionen in deinem Land?

Please note: for the conversation task card the questions in the Instructions for teachers/examiners are given as guidelines, so need not be followed exactly by the teacher/examiner. It is essential, however, that the teacher/examiner covers the candidates’ subtopics.
