This video is a submission for more than one candidate. In this syllabus the option within Submit for Assessment to tag multiple candidates against one piece of evidence is useful to centres. Two or three candidates may be filmed at the same time performing the same skills to reduce filming length if needed and if appropriate to their skill level. The moderator comments for this video refer to the performance of one candidate only. However, scaling may have been applied to the centre as a whole when taking the performance of all candidates into account.

The candidate is identified in the moderator commentary displayed in the video below: blue bib 6.

This candidate would be placed in the middle Level 4 range.

When deciding where to place the candidate in this level consider technique, accuracy and consistency performing skills to a good level in practices and in a game.

Remember to check the assessment conditions for this level have been met.

A. The candidate is serving from both sides of the table to an opponent. This is a Level 2 skill.
B. Rallies are maintained using the candidate’s forehand and backhand and when placing the ball on different parts of the table. The bat is seen moving from a low to a high position when playing the stroke. These are Level 3 skills.
C. The candidate is seen playing attacking and defensive roles. When attacking, the candidate can place spin on the ball and towards the end of the rally, he demonstrates that he can play the shot at speed. The candidate clearly prefers his forehand, but some backhand shots are seen. He can slow the ball down in defence, allowing his opponent to demonstrate his attacking shots. This practice gives the candidate access to a Level 3.
D. Match play. This allows the candidate access to Level 4 marks. He can maintain rallies using forehand and backhand strokes. He can defend the backspin placed on the ball by his opponent. He is able to turn a defensive situation into an attacking one in order to win the rally. He can play topspin rallies with reasonable speed and accuracy.
E. The candidate could use his backhand serve more and improve his movement and footwork around the table as this could help to eliminate the errors in his play and place him more towards the top of Level 4. Stronger opposition may demonstrate the candidate’s tactical play and possibly confirm placement at the top of Level 4. The evidence seen would place the candidate in Level 4.

Some issues seen with Table Tennis from some centres:

  • The film is very narrow and small making it difficult to see the candidates' action and the outcome of their performed skill.
  • The whole table is not seen as the camera only focuses on the candidates’ action and not the outcome of the action.
  • The candidate is only seen receiving a serve in a game situation. They should also be seen serving in a game situation.
  • Hand-fed balls represent a low level of challenge. Candidates wishing to access the higher levels must demonstrate their skills in conditioned games/drills where time and space can be restricted. The candidate is then seen playing their strokes under pressure.
