Introduction to inclusive learning

Inclusive learning in Early Years ensures that everyone feels a sense of belonging. This includes the children, their parents and carers, and all the staff that work or help in the setting.

Child and teacher celebrating success

Every child is different and they each develop at their own pace. Therefore inclusive learning is not about treating all children the same, but about treating each child fairly. Inclusive learning considers each child’s background, needs and interests. This section aims to share how you can ensure you have an inclusive environment, by suggesting ways that children can bring diversity to your setting.

Inclusion in the education context is sometimes taken to apply specifically to those children identified as having Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). It has a much broader meaning and applies to the practices, attitudes and values that create an environment and community where everybody belongs and can contribute.
