The candidate studies the work of the photographer Dorothea Lange. The photographs used are consistently labelled with locations and dates. The candidate identifies the capability of photography to respond to human circumstances. Lange’s work is used as evidence that photography can convey emotion through facial expression, gesture and surroundings. The candidate also insightfully recognises that photographic communication is supported by visual composition. The candidate goes on to state that the dramatic compositions of Modernism were adopted by Lange. Some of Lange’s photographs associated with travel are included. This work is rewarded in AO1.
