Common mistakes and guidance
- Incorrect response to the focus of questions:
Make sure candidates are familiar with questioning formulations such as ‘Wh’
and ‘How’ questions and the different tenses that may be targeted.
- Using phrases rather than complete sentences as
well as a lack of control of sentences, particularly tense: Provide
opportunities for candidates to use a range of tenses in sentences (e.g. to
talk about personal experiences in the past, to discuss current preferences or
to express future intentions).
- Insufficient variety of vocabulary: Encourage
candidates to learn topic-related vocabulary in lexically related sets (e.g.
means of transport, adjectives to express feelings, verbs/phrases to express
likes/dislikes, household chores).
- Unclear pronunciation of some key words and
noticeable fillers: Provide opportunities for candidates to practise syllable
word stress and to develop fluency of expression.
