      Course aims

This course aims to introduce you to active learning, and help you to understand how to apply active learning in your teaching practice. During the course we will explore the following questions:

      What is active learning?

      • What does effective active learning look like?
      • How does active learning apply to my own practice?
      • What is my action plan?
      • How do I know that including active learning in my classes made a positive impact?

      Course completion criteria

Collaboration and reflection are key to effective learning. During this course you will be working closely with other teachers to develop your understanding and share ideas and experiences. In order to complete the course and receive your certificate, you must fully participate in the collaborative activities throughout the course.

The course checklist in the sidebar shows your progress throughout the course. Your tutor will regularly update the checklist to indicate when you have successfully completed an activity.

If you are going to be absent from the course for more than 5 days or cannot continue with the course, contact your tutor.

      Course discussions

The Course café  is where I will contact you with information such as course deadlines, new materials and urgent messages. The café is also for general discussions about the course, your teaching or any other subject that you want to talk about.

All course conversations will take place in Discussions. Each week there will be a separate discussion topic for the key theme(s) of that week. These discussions are a vital aspect of the course. You are expected to contribute regularly. I recommend that you try to check your messages every day to make sure that you keep up with the group discussions. Throughout this course you will be working in small groups in order to facilitate collaboration and discussion. I will be putting you in your groups during Week 1 and I will post a message in the Course café when the groups are ready.

Reflection is the key to relating knowledge to your own experience. Each week of the course there are questions to help you reflect on what you have learnt and how it relates to your own teaching experience. You can use the Journal to record your thoughts.

      Course calendar

You can view all of the course content from the beginning, but you will only be able to access the week's discussions, walls and activities on the dates below. The weeks open on Monday at 0900 UTC.

You can access each week by using the buttons on the left-hand side of the screen.
