Having outside space allows children to make choices about where they want to play and to move around more freely. Provide a range of outside resources that develop gross motor skills, hand-eye coordination and balance. For example, include:

      • climbing equipment with soft material underneath for safety
      • balancing equipment with soft material underneath for safety
      • moving toys. For example, wheeled vehicles with pedals, rocking horses, balance bikes, scooters, wheelbarrows, doll prams
      • a sand tray and a water tray with containers for exploring
      • a mud kitchen with the types of utensils, bowls, pots and pans, etc. that you would find in a kitchen, to promote pretend play cooking with mud, sand and water
      • large building blocks or boxes that children can sit on, or in, for imaginative play
      • a variety of small equipment that can be used for movement activities. For example, bean bags, cones, low obstacles to jump over, hula hoops, skipping ropes.
