Writing/mark making area
Provide a table and chairs where children can use writing and mark-making tools and materials, or can access these tools and materials to take to include in their play in other areas. Include:
- a wall-mounted whiteboard at child height, and marker pens
- a range of mark-making and writing tools
- paper of various types, sizes, shapes and colours
- a variety of stationery items. For example, cards, envelopes, sticky notes, sticky labels
- clipboards
- displays of, for example, children’s mark-making or writing, letters of the alphabet, focus blends or words.
Art area
Provide an area where children can express themselves through 2D and 3D art and design, including ‘transient art’ which is when children arrange loose pieces on a surface. Children may also use this area to make props for play in other areas. Include:
- a range of media. For example, paint, modelling clay, drawing and colouring pencils, crayons, thick and thin markers, chalks
- a range of natural and manufactured materials. For example, paper and textiles of different colours, sizes and textures, large and small cardboard boxes, beads, stones, leaves, cones, seeds, shells
- a range of tools. For example, scissors, paintbrushes of different sizes and thicknesses, modelling tools such as sticks, cutlery
- glue, sticky tape, string, etc., for joining materials together
- access to nearby washing facilities
- storage for work in progress
- access to digital devices to photograph transient art
- objects and displays to inspire new ideas, including children's work and photographs of children undertaking creative activities.
